David Newman Biography

David Newman is a professor of Physics at the University of Alaska-Fairbanks as well as being the Director of the Center for Complex Systems Studies also at UAF. Before coming to UAF in 1998 he was selected as a Wigner Fellow at Oak Ridge National Laboratory in 1993 and worked there as a research scientist from 1993-1998. In 1997, he was awarded the Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers. Before getting his PhD at the University of Wisconsin in 1993, Prof. Newman served in the US Peace Corps teaching in Kenya for 2 years. His research work has covered Plasma Physics, Fluid turbulence, and nonlinear dynamics as well as modeling the dynamics of complex systems such as the power transmission grid and communications networks.
