Attending a night event at the Monterey Bay Aquarium (MBA) provides an unforgettable experience and makes a difference! As a nonprofit organization, event proceeds support the MBA’s exhibit, education and conservation research programs. Amazing animals and awe-inspiring views are just a few things that make the MBA unique. The MBA’s mission to inspire conservation of the ocean drives all of their day-to-day culinary operations.

Executive Chef Matthew Beaudin’s creative, inspired and sustainable cooking philosophy centers on fresh, local and in-season ingredients, and suppliers who care about ocean conservation. Chef Matthew sources 90 percent of all produce, protein, and dairy products within 90 miles of the Aquarium, which reduces carbon emissions associated with shipping and storing food from outside the region. He is also an advocate for the Monterey Bay Aquarium’s Seafood Watch. Hear Chef Matthew discuss our night events HERE.

The Monterey Bay Aquarium is proud to announce that all the events they host will now be CarbonNeutral® certified with Natural Capital Partners! MBA continues to increase efficiency, support electric vehicles, use renewable energy and reduce event waste. Any remaining emissions are offset with verified emissions reductions from an afforestation project in Mexico. In addition, they are supporting the Million Mangrove campaign and 1,250 mangrove trees will be planted in Southern Mexico. MBA is proud to support these projects, which aligns with Monterey Bay Aquarium’s strategy and connection to two UN Sustainable Development Goals: SDG 13 Climate Action and SDG 14 Life Below Water. Achieving certification for events program, promotes their efforts to model best practices for environmental sustainability.

In this new program MBA is including offsetting of corporate event attendees’ emissions from their travel to the Aquarium and their hotel stays.

To achieve CarbonNeutral® certification, MBA is working with Natural Capital Partners, experts in the delivery of solutions for positive impact on carbon and renewable energy. MBA has achieved net zero greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in accordance with The CarbonNeutral Protocol, the global standard for carbon neutral programs. This involved an independent assessment of the CO2 emissions produced from heating, lighting, waste, supplier and attendee travel followed by the purchase of environmental instruments which support low carbon sustainable development and renewable energy projects around the world. All the projects are independently verified to assure the quality of the emissions reductions or renewable energy generation to enable MBA to report a net zero carbon footprint.
